About the Academy

Battery Academy Naija is an initiative of ACE-FUELS at the Federal University of Technology Owerri. It trains the people who handle batteries every day — collectors, technicians, installers, dealers and regulators — to work safely and to keep valuable materials in the loop.

Why this Academy exists

Batteries are arriving in Nigeria in growing volumes — in phones, in solar home systems, in inverters, in vehicles. Handled well, they are a source of materials and skilled work. Handled badly, they are a fire risk, a health risk and a waste problem. The Academy exists to move the second case towards the first, by teaching the skills and assessing them properly.

The training is deliberately practical. It covers identification and condition categories, safe handling and hazard control, receiving quality and diagnostics, reuse decisions, and the recycling routes and reporting that follow.

What the Academy is not

A Battery Academy Naija certificate records the tasks assessed in a project course. It is not a national qualification or licence, and it does not authorise hazardous work without employer authorisation. That scope statement appears on the certificates themselves and on the verification page.

Who it is for

Collectors and lead collectors
Orientation and basic training delivered in person, with WhatsApp and voice follow-up. Collectors never need a Moodle account.
Technicians, installers and advanced practitioners
Advanced assessed training and installer extension courses, with theory on Moodle and practical stations in person.
Businesses and cooperatives
Collection centre supervision, transport and logistics, and circular enterprise courses.
Regulators, universities and development partners
A course built for institutional stakeholders, ending in an institutional action plan.

Training is organised by the six geopolitical zones. The first wave covers the Southwest, Southeast and South South; the North Central, Northeast and Northwest zones follow in the next wave.

Project context and partners

Battery Academy Naija is delivered by ACE-FUELS, Federal University of Technology Owerri, under the project Recycling Lithium Batteries for Critical Minerals: An Africa First, supported by the UNIDO Accelerate-to-Demonstrate (A2D) Facility.

CR-005 Content required

Funder and consortium logos are withheld until visibility clearance is confirmed. The live site carries the same restriction in its own source comments.

Quality and assurance

Every certificate-bearing course carries a knowledge check, a practical element where the work is physical, and a list of critical items that must all be passed. Completion requires every required item to pass — a high total can never override a failed critical item.

Course content follows the approved WP6 curriculum and is version-controlled. The website and the Moodle platform are kept in step with the approved curriculum version.

CR-008 Content required

Curriculum version and approval status should be published here once the FUTO technical lead and Hinckley review of curriculum v1.1 is confirmed.
